Hi all,

Was wondering tonight how to tell remotely how long my server had been up, and found this from Microsoft. So far, working fine on Win2k Server and XP Pro, so would appear to be pretty all current versions of Windows-compatible.

uptime.exe - copy to C:\windir, and run from a CLI.

I'll going to give it a try on win2k pro, however this nifty tools works on

• 
  Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

That's when the workstation server started, which is pretty close after the machine boots.

Now before people get picky I'll point out that if you do a net stop and a net start then that time gets reset. So, yes, it *might* not be the correct uptime. But then, on the other hand, how many times have you done a net stop and start on that service?

Perhaps not - but might depend on what you want!

You will have realized, I'm certain, that most of the output from the uptime util is fished straight out of the system log, so it is more a convenience util.

On a slightly different note, I sometimes wonder just what lies behind most people wanting the 'uptime' rather than the date/time of the last boot.

The uptime figure all too often gets used in willy-waving contests as to who has the most stable server (OK - I'll indulge - the 'best' server I admin has an uptime of 1011 days, with two others close behind). I'm usualy more interested in *when* was the last reboot - because I want to know why it did and match it with other logged events.
