Can anyone recommend any software for recording audio on a PC?

Windows Sound Recorder does what I need it to, but only lasts for a minute.

Anyone recommend something that does longer?

. Simon are you recording audio on to the PC?. Or are you trying to record audio from the PC?

 

I have audio input from a Tape player which is connected through the Mic port, which outputs to my speakers. What I want to do is record the audio onto the PC and then convert it to MP3 format.

 

I have never done this but have you tried http://www.dartpro.com/products/Dart_XP_Pro.asp them seem to allow a 30 day trial. Maybe worth a try.

Windows sound recorder is not the best - but it *can* be made to record longer than 1 min. Either join the minute to itself several times or use a unwanted file, and the recorder will record into it for it's whole length!

For a somewhat less silly answer - Nero these days has a sound recorder app built in.

If you are recording vinyl or from an old cassette then Steinberg Clean has a good reputation, as it includes filters for tape hiss and surface pops.

heh heh - I posted about this a long time ago, and Phoenix came up trumps with Audiograbber. It does what it says on the tin, end is free. Looks like great minds think alike. Great software for the job in hand.

 

Don't use the mic input - all such on PCs have a very poor signal/noise ratio.

If the player has line output use the line in on the sound system.

Music Match Jukebox will also do recording and conversion to MP3, and this is bundled with many motherboards.

i'm sure there's better stuff, but long ago i used nero wave editor (which came with nero burning rom) for my tape-to-mp3 recordings.

If you're still playing with Linux try Audacity. I think you might be pretty impressed with it. I've never really messed with it too much but I installed it tonight just to look at it and it seems to have quite a few features....

Well, after going to their webiste it seems it's cross platform so you could even install it Linux, Mac, or on that inferior OS too....

What software did you decide on and why?

 

To be honest with you Freddy, I haven't decided on any yet. Been that busy with other stuff that I haven't got back to it yet.

I've downloaded Audio Grabber, but that's about as far as I've got.
I've also spent most of the day yesterday at work sorting out my work laptop so that I can set it up as a dual boot with XP and Ubuntu. When It's done I'll give your recommendation a try and let you know.
