Gutted. Just missed it by a whisker. 695. I'm annoyed though both at myself and at CompTIA.

I'm annoyed at myself for using the 003 books and not buying 004 material and hoping I could wing the new stuff. I'm annoyed that I don't care how long a piece of cable is.

I'm annoyed that CompTIA choose to pose the most incredibly vague questions possible. I'm annoyed that CompTIA exams, or at least the one I just sat, do not offer access to calc.exe or something similar.

004 certainly raises the bar but due to the utter vagueness in the questions I took too long pondering over my choice of answer, didn't get to finish and as time was running out wasted my time pondering 3 questions and changed my answers thus possibly costing me a pass.

The question begs now though if I have enough will to want to sit the exam again. I'm sure if I sat it again I would pass with flying colours as I know what to expect in terms of vague, rubbish question writing. However what puts me off now is justifying spending all that money just to sit the exam again in the possibility a) I fail or b) I pass and complete my MCSA elective having just spent the best part of US$500 getting there on the N+ alone when going the MCP route will take more exams but will likely be cheaper.

    Decisions decisions...

edit: Actually, looking at the MCSA requirements, I have 270 and 290. I'm doing 291 at present, so all I would need after that is one more MCP for the elective. Costs nowhere near as much as N+ either and second shot should apply. I think I might o that route, purely because of the cost of N+. Maybe do N+ later in the year before Jan 1 2011 though.

Sorry to hear that mate, and so close too. Its a hard choice but I'd say if you were ever to get your N+, you should do it soon before you start forgetting anything. Can you not get your company to pay for your exams?I didn't go down the A+ N+ route for an elective purely because although they count as an elective for an MCSA, they don't count toward the MCSE, which was my initial goal in 2009. If you plan to carry on to get your MCSE, personally I'd swerve the N+, if not I'd resit it ASAP. Thats just my 2 cents, I'm sure others will chip in. Jim

Bugger, unlucky mate. Its (obviously) entirely up to you whether you resit or not but with your current objective in mind I think I'd recommend skipping it and finishing the MCSA off with one of the MS electives then you can go back and get the N+ with no real pressure if you can be bothered.

Thanks all. Indeed, thanks to your sage advice I've decided to drop the N+ altogether and concentrate on 70-291 and 70-680.

The kicker being the A+ and N+ are useless for the MCSE.

I'm less bitter about it today and have put it down to a mix of bad luck and stupidity of not buying up to date books on my part. The only thing I'm still bitter about is the cost of a retake which has put me off getting the cert (I'd still like to just have the cert in my portfolio).

The thing I will take to my grave with me though is the three questions I changed the answers to at the end. I'll never forget that. Who knows how the points per question were scored, but I have a feeling had I left my answers alone I'd be sitting here today with an N+ stamped on my portfolio.

Time to pull my pants up, unpucker my CompTIA savagely-puckered buttocks and concentrate on the 70-291.......which I'm sitting tomorrow morning at 9:30am!

    :biggrin

Then I hope you'll forgive me for throwing a spanner in the works, because the A+ and Network+ can indeed be used as an MCSE elective: link

I should pay attention more in class! :biggrin

Even still, I had a moment to weigh up my options last night and I'm still doing the 291 of course. But instead of N+ I'm now going for the 70-680 for valid reasons.

    1. I was going to do it anyway after MCSA was obtained.

    2. My new office will be all Windows 7 and Server 2008.

Problem solved. 70-680 it is. :biggrin

Wonder why they have now included the A+ and N+. Maybe it could be because the new version of the N+ seems to more heavily involved with subnetting and TCP/IP. Since I have to get the new Network + I have been seeing alot of difference, I don't remember CIDR being mentioned alot in the last N+ and there seems be alot more topic relating to clustering and IpV4 with IpV6 being a lot more heavily talked about..

I haven't looked at the new A+ exams so not sure of any possible reason for that to be included as an elective.
