I'm most likely going to 'scratch my itch' and buy an HP ML115 tomorrow to make a better home lab.

After doing a bit of research, I have found that www.redstore.com have the ML115 instock and they appear to have a decent google rating.

I'm looking at the following specification:

    - 1 x HP ProLiant ML115 G5 AMD Opteron Quad Core 2.2GHz
    - 4 x 2GB Kingston ValueRAM 2GB DDR2 800MHz PC2-6400 200-pin Non-ECC Unbuffered CL6 Memory Module
    - 2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II Hard Drive 3.5" Internal 7200rpm Buffer 16MB

All in next day delivered for less than £440.00

I have decided to upgrade my MCSE this year to MCITP:EA so need a piece of Hardware that can run several Server 2008 in Hyper V.

Before, I part with the wonga, any of you hardware junkies got any advice? Apart from spend more money :biggrin

Nah mate sounds perfect go for it. Glad you chose those HD's as the .11's and below put out more noise but I hear the .12's as pretty quiet. You'll have to pass the Hyper-V exam once you get settled. Not just saying it but its as easy as the Vista MCST's so you'll have no trouble. Jimbo :biggrin

Only to see whether you can stretch your budget to another box to run openfiler on for iSCSI and run ESXi on the ML115 instead of full-fat Windows (more resources for additional VMs) :biggrin

I have a same set but with a few extras, 8GB RAM and i installed a better RAID controller as the onboard is limited in ESXi 4 (doesnt fully support all RAID modes). Also I put ESXi 4 on a internal USB stick that it boots from.

I have also used it with iSCSI via a openfiler box.

I spoke to the Mrs's about two boxes and the word 'divorce' was mentioned :biggrin

Perhaps when we move to a bigger Bat Cave in the next couple of years.

Yeah, I have heard good things about the .12. I know the 2.5" a meant to be some of the best on the market for Laptops.

Hopefully, this will all be in stock tomorrow and the shop open, when I call in the morning.

Oh, I think I might bet staying in, for the New Year, getting my geek on

I have opted for 8GB RAM as well, just re-read my post and it appears misleading 4 x 2GB.

Whats the inbuilt RAID like?, thats what I will be using for now.

    lol i thought it said 2 x 2GB

It should work fine, if you not using mirror (RAID 0 = it fails to mirror without telling you) and you'll have to use the controllers BIOS to configure RAID sets. they may have fixed it in ESXi 4 U1

Third party RAID controllers will offer better performance under heavy usage, especially controllers with a large write back cache (w/ battery backup of course). Fully supported one should be more configurable and have better reporting from within ESXi.

almost forgot the HP optimised version of ESXi is downloadable from HP not VMware (if you prefer, not sure of differences myself)

Lol, not yet mate, can't wait to get the badboy installed.

Forgot that I don't have a cabled connection in my Bat Cave, so I had to order a Linksys Wireless N USB.

So in total, was just under £470.

The Server and Hard Drives should arrive tomorrow, with the Memory and Wireless Adapter the day after.

It's like Christmas all over again :D

Well when you turn them on or reboot they sound like a jet taking off (the main fan is full on).
However, this only lasts for a few seconds then they settle down and are almost silent.

Tru dat - try powering four on at once - deafening if you've (stupidly) got them placed at ear height - though running them all 24/7 in my man cave does mean I don't need to have any heating down there :D
