I must say i'm impressed with both thier minimum system requirements LOL
32 MB for VPC and 128MB for VMWare

im guessing thats to run the program and not actually perform its main function :P

Edit: ok just read it finally, ooo thumbs up for VMWare :)

A good article I think. Seemed to be fair and left the conclusion up to you as to what you really need.

Since the issue of VMWare vs Virtual PC keeps coming up, I thought I'd pin this thread so the "shootout" between the two could be easily found and read. For those of you who haven't had a chance to review it...enjoy. :)

hope no one minds me bringing this thread up again...I am now thinking of trying these out as I have a 64bit dual core machine just asking to be abused  :D and was wondering which one you guys would recommend...or is it possible to get them both and test them? what with getting a new job, I need to get my hands "dirty" with the likes of SBS and Exchange Server (which I have copies of) and also see what both VMWare and Virtual PC have to offer me...thanks all :biggrin

Hi mate, you can download Virtual PC for free from the Microsoft site.

There is a trial version of VMWare to download from their site.

Thanks AJ...looks like VMWare certainly asks alot of questions about wanting the Workstation so I will leave that one for now and work on Virtual PC...will download VMWare when I start me new job...

I use virtual PC, no complaints so far. I have all the Windows Operating systems from 3.1 to XP running and also SBS and Server 2003.

After setting how much RAM the virtual PC is to use I only had to enable the CD drive so I could boot from it, easy! 8)

    Hi Folks..

I've just been reading some of the threads but why is there VMware Workstation and VMware Server?

What is the purpose of both. Is VMware Server required to install the likes of Windows 2003/2k/Exchange etc and VMware workstation required for XP/2K/ME etc?

Can both VMware Server and Workstation be installed on the one host machine?

    Regards

    Declan

VMWare Server is free, but does not contain all of the features that VM Workstation has.

As for your other questions Phoenix would be the best person to ask.

    Cheers Wizard.

I'm just trying to visualise where the two products would be used and in what context. i.e Having a small test network all on one host computer - A virtual version of Windows 2003 (or SBS 2003) + 2 or 3 virtual XP workstations.

In terms of having 2 or 3 virtual copies of XP installed on the host computer I gather then that you still need to have the required number of licenses irrespect as to wether you are using Virtual PC or VMWare.

Workstation and Server can both be used in a 'test' environment, however workstation has more features useful for this such as multiple snapshots for quick recovery etc

you can't have both installed on the same host as far as I am aware, they conflict with each other

you will still need applicable licenses however for a demo i recommend getting hold of the trial copies.. whilst you may not be able to download trials of Xp anymore some of the training books may well come with one
