It *sounds* like your mobo supported 1333MHz before that type of CPU was released.
Me: You need to buy a couple of servers.
Customer: Whats wrong with the servers I have?
Me: Well, you dont have *any* servers just now.
Customer: WTF! I thought I did!
I would go with the E8400. Its the newer of the two, has a better stock clock speed and faster FSB. Its plenty good enough to use in your beast machine next year, let alone the curent one! You can overclock the Q6600 but need some fat cooling

Thats what I was thinking do all boxed cpus come with those heat strips on these days? as I would rather use thermal paste and a good cooling fan like zalman or artic cooling.

My E6600 came with the strips on the stock cooler, the CPU was clean. I used the stock cooler for about a year, it was ok. My Zalman with Akasa silver thermal paste has knocked 10 degrees C and more off the running temps.

I have an intake fan and exhaust fan; with the CPU cooler pushing air in the same direction makes for really good air flow through the case.

cheers for that, I have a back case fan and an exhaust fan. There isn't much point in putting an intake fan on my case as its a bit crap. I wonder if I'll have to change case too.
As long as you have a good exhaust fan it will lower the pressure in the case and cause cool air to rush in from the outside. You dont really need an intake fan. The beauty of that Zalman cooler is it blows the hot air from the CPU directly in to the exhaust fan, which shoves it out the back.
