I use one with Flash and Fireworks for freehand drawing.
I'm left handed but use my mouse with my right and find it really difficult to do arty stuff.
Bit of both works for me.

I am really bad at freehand drawing. I saw Julieanna Kost in one of the adobe video using one in PS when she had to use the marquee tool. She had very good control of it with the pen. I may get the little bamboo from wacom for this.

Amazon has the Bamboo (Small) Pen Tablet with Pen Only on sale right now. Don't know how long it will last. You might want to check the uk site and see if they have any sales.

Your inexpensive open source software is useless for advanced photographers, and I say this as someone who functions at an expert level in GIMP. The only thing holding me back from moving my main workstation over to Linux is my inability to run CS2 on it. It's quite simply the best image manipulation tool on the market and I refuse to part with it. My next "Photoshop" system will probably be a Mac.
I'd also like to point out, coming from a film and darkroom background, that Photoshop is anything BUT expensive. I could spend an entire day in the darkroom dodging and burning a print to try and get it where I wanted it. Dodging, burning, bleaching, etc., is a trial and error process no matter how experienced you are, and it's not uncommon for a skilled artist to go through 100 or more sheets of paper trying to get that one good print. Now, with Photoshop, I can get the look I want the first time, every time, without spending hundreds of dollars in materials. I call that a bargain.

I actually got a 'trust' tablet from asda for 30 quid. I do web design and just use PS CS3 cos I was told to get it basically but don't regret it for one minute. I just use it to edit my images for the web and designing banners etc. My tablets great for that.
I had never really looked at one of these before. They are actually pretty cool. They are also pretty much plug and play under Linux for the Bamboo, Intuos3, Cintiq, and a couple of other models. All you do in Ubuntu and Debian is install the wacom tools package and copy and paste from howto's any configuration settings.
The GIMP also has support for wacom tablets.
What's the life span of one these, and what's an optimal size of tablet as there are several sizes to choose from? I'm asking because my wife is pretty artistic and I think she would love to be able to create with one of these. I'd probably be looking at the Intuos3 model line which seems to be sort of the mid-range model as far as price goes.

Thanks Auror, I will have to google your brand and see what it brings up here in the states. I am planing on getting one this summer. I can't justify gettting one now, since basically all I can do at the moment in PS is open it up. I am hell on wheels I'm telling you.

I don't know how long they last Freedy, reading the reviews on amazon the people talked like they had them for 5 or 6 years. The small bamboo one is on sale at amazon for 54 dollars. Can't remember what the mid size one was but I belive it was on sale too. I have looked on ebay, but I don't think that is something that I want to buy used.

I've have and have been using an old Wacom Graphire since from around '98, I think. It was $10 in a bargain bin and It's sitting on my desk attached to the system I mainly use for doing design on for the vinyl cutter. It's had gawd knows how many cans of Dr. Pepper spilled on it and it's hit the floor dozens of times. It just keeps chugging along. The things are sturdy enough.
