Welcome to our Master Class Primer on VMWare
for a broad overview of VMWare and its benefits to training please see my VMWare article
Each Master class will have a basic VMWare requirements section listing the settings for the virtual machine that will be required, it will likely be in the format below (or similar)
VM Type: (Typical or Custom) Guest OS: (Microsoft Windows, Linux, Novell Netware or Other) Guest Version: Select from pull down menu Virtual Machine Name: Varies Virtual Machine Location: Varies Network Connection: (bridged, NAT, Host-only or none) Disk Configuration: Default means leave it at 4.0GB
This basically gives you all the required info to set up the virtual machine per the VM wizard within VMWare (File -> New Virtual Machine or CTRL+N)
Additional Config: variables such as extra Network Cards, Hard disks, etc
The VM Console is pretty self explanitory once a VM has been created and requires no additional config for instalation of the guest OS, however I would like you to all go over the 'Edit Virtual Machine Settings' and view some of the options there for creating aditional components
and for loading ISO images as virtual CDRoms rather than using your host machines CDRom (saves you burning CDs also), these will be needed for the classes requireing 'additional config'
Queries will be answered, please play around with it and ask any questions you have regarding VMWare before next weeks lesson
I plan to leave the boot CD as an ISO image in VMWare.
This way i wont have to physically insert a CD every time I use the OS.
Having said that, we'll probably use feature the suspend a lot, so won't need to boot up often.
Whilst I appreciate that you are doing this for VMWare, would it be possible to just put a little addition to those of us (well me anyway) who are installing the OS on a single machine. Total newbie here.
Thanks
AJ

well in all fairness AJ you shouldnt require any extra info!
just make sure you have a PC with a CDRom, Keyboard mouse and monitor
and a decent sized hard disk (i mean, 5gb will be enought as you wont be able to use the backup techniques we will be using in VMWare to roll back
we have to use VMWare to get to the point your already at, ie, having a machine to install the OS! :P
and Flex, im not sure what you mean about a boot disk, a real distro is just like XP, once installed no CD is required!
Ok, I'm sure once I actually do the install thing it'll be totally clear in ym head, without doubt.
But I get it now anyway, thx Phoenix explanation .I keep thinking it's like knoppix where you boot with the CD
I've downloaded the Fedora disks 1 and 2 and shall look at outting it onto my test machine as soon as i can, once I've got the data off. Then once we've got it up and running I would lioke to join it to my XP workgroup, but I think that is a little way off.
Anyway thanks Phoenix

as its only a workgroup its piece of piss, but we cant really join it to 'a domain' at present, apart from a windows NT domain, infact it can even take over the role of PDC
