Phoenix maybe you or other VM guru's could help me on this one.

I created 4 vm's in a windows XP pro environment. XP pro is the host machine. I then copied over the vm's that I created in xp to a vista laptop, I installed the same version VMware workstation however now in the laptop I get an error when I try to open any vm that I created in xp. I tried looking around on google and didn't get much info on this problem. A few people mentioned to do some tweaks here and there and few options configs but nothing really helped.

Here are the errors that I get:

Have you tried the import facility?

File >> Import >> Next >> Next >> Standalone Virtual Machine

Are .vmx files on same path as before ? F:\college\My Virtual Machines

I use open then import.
You opening the .vmx file ?

I blame vista .)


the more features, in the new install of vmware have you installed vmware tools under VM on tool bar

And is it a full clone or as linked clone. A link clone has to have the lone then the original turned on.

I tried to do an import and was asked to specify the config file, I am only able to specify .vmc file or .sv2i not vmx. So it does not show any files when I brows to the directory of the vm location.

Yes, I am opening a .vmx file. Also the path is the same on the laptop as the host pc.

The vm is a full clone.

Hey sorry for slow response, just saw this
I cant really test the same circumstances as I dont have any XP systems left, and I have not come across this one before

it's definatly likely to be something to do with the way the VMs are stored on the different OSes, however what exactly I dont know, so it will be hard to fix

you could try create a new CUSTOM VM
then when you get to the DISK part choose an existing virtual disk, and point it at the ones already on disk
that should regenerate everything apart from the VMDK file

You can edit the vmx files they are just text. If you change the paths by moving files it will naturally break.

Theres also free utils to help you manage you VM's :-

http://petruska.stardock.net/Software/VMware.html

In this case try VMX Builder and check the settings.

If you move a dual core VM to a single core machine you will have issues. (I don't think you have doen this just thought i'd mention it.)
