There are no problems that cannot be solved through suitable application of high explosives !
If you have downloaded the latest FF update, try rolling back sometimes the updates for firefox can do this, its also the same with add-ons like no script and add blocker.
i did all the software updates last night, only installed add ons after i realised it werent working. is this a linux prob as i been using firefox for 4 years in windows and not seen this prob before ?

I don't know about Linux but I do know of some people having trouble with FF not saving passwords and names after installing add-ons and updates on various OSs normally it was sorted by removing the add on or taking the update off.
Me: You need to buy a couple of servers.
Customer: Whats wrong with the servers I have?
Me: Well, you dont have *any* servers just now.
Customer: WTF! I thought I did!
I'm betting it's a browser setting thing. There's nothing about the Linux kernel or the Ubuntu distro that would cause such a specific error. I did a little Googling and while I could find nothing associating Linux in general or Ubuntu in specific with this sort of problem, I did find a "smoking gun" associated with Firefox. This problem was posted on three other forums by apparently unrelated folks. Here are the links:
See if what was reported on any of those forums makes any sense and leads to a solution. I use Ubuntu 6.06 with Firefox 1.5.0.11 everyday and flawlessly login and post to this and several other forums. Good luck.
"That detective, is the right question. Program terminated".

Ummm.... What do you mean by this? How are you typing in a password in a browser without your keyboard?
Also, please give me the exact steps you use to try to log in here and fail. I've had login failures here before, but they were of the variety that I'd enter name and password, hit the login button, the browser would cycle through, I would be told I had logged in, and then when taken back to the login page it was as if nothing had happened. After cycling through the process a few times the problem stopped, and I've never had another problem with it.
I've never gotten an invalid user name and password before, except when giving an invalid user name and/or password in error.
What are your settings as far as cookies, history, and temporary files are concerned? Have you tried deleting all temporary files, deleting all cookies, closing your browser, starting it back up and starting over?

i'm at work now so can't check the settings, i just log in by typing in the username and password. As you can't see the password because it's starred out i typed it into the address bar to double check it was actually being typed in correctly and it was ok. it's not just this forum, i can't log into any forums even though i'm 100% certain the username and password are correct.

Hmmm.... I don't know on this one. I've never seen anything like that, nor have I run across anyone who has had that problem in my surfing either. It's a first.
Install wireshark and fire it up just before you try logging in. It will sniff all the packets so that you will be able to see if it is sending your user name and password.
