So this morning I have decided to do a speed test...since I have noticed my speed seems to be fastest in the mornings and slow in the afternoon/evenings. This might have something to do with the fact that 2 of my neighbours are on Virgin media too and we are all sharing the same Telewest box thats behind the main front door.
But I have done a speed test and this was the result:
I was wondering if we can get people to post their speed tests so we can see how speeds vary up and down the country (also abroad)

might need to state what connection you pay for, what connection you actually get and where you are.

There are no problems that cannot be solved through suitable application of high explosives !
The speeds shown are pretty consistent for me. Download will vary some(maybe down to around 7-7.5 megs at very busy times of the day), but upload is always right at a meg or just above it.
The line is rated at 8megs down, 1 meg up, and I pay way more than it's worth as there is only 1 ISP in town that offers anything close to this. I'm approximately twice the cost of a local residential account with half download, and 400Kbps upload. Working from home now requires that I have good upload speeds as I transfer a lot of files between my home lan and work. Upload speeds of 3-400Kbps would simply be very inconvenient, and the download speeds let me do a Debian netinstall very quickly. It's only a matter of a 6 or 7 minute download to get an entire OS. I couldn't even install from a cd in that amount of time.

lol...yeah good point hehe...I am on a 20meg connection with Virgin media...in Newcastle upon tyne and as I say there are times when my speeds are as low as 256Kbps...again I think this might be to do with my neighbours using theirs at the same time as it seems faster late night/early morning

If my speeds varied that much on a 20meg connection I'd be raising cain at my providers offices on a daily basis. My ISP guarantees me at least 5 megs down and 512K up at all times. There are total daily usage caps, but I have never run into them yet.

I should point out that my account is considered to be a business account at this point too, and the support is really very good. I've called one time with a problem since I moved my account to a business account and they had someone out here within a couple of hours.
The tech knew his business very well, and had the problem fixed in less than 15 minutes. He fixed an intermittent problem that had been ongoing for at least a couple of years where my modem would mysteriously drop its connection and then regain it an hour or two later. It would do this about once a month during good times, and several times a week during the bad times. I'd had half a dozen residential techs out over the last couple of years and none of them found the problem. This guy found it and fixed it quickly. I was impressed with his skills.

So who was watching the Gadget show on channel 5 last night then? They wanted everyone to test thier BB speeds and complain to ISPs about the service etc.
Anyway theres mine
And just as fun.. to New Zealand,
