Hey has anyone here taken the offensive security courses or the cert test? i start the course work on monday the 11th and from what i can gather so far it sounds like it'll be a bunch of fun. much more fun than the CEH which seemed more like theory when compared to this which seems to nothing more than vpn connect to a network and hack away at it for the specific purpose of that lesson.
TBH, the level of the course seems pretty similar to the CEH, though not as widely known.
Obviously its just focused on BackTrack, and will give you a good solid grounding in all the tools on the BackTrack distro. That's good, but there are plenty of areas that the CEH covers that I guess won't be on the Offensive Security course, so it might pay you to do the CEH instead (unless you've already taken it, and are thinking of doing this as well which, IMHO, would probably be a waste of money)
EDIT - just seen your sig - you're already a CEH, so I wouldn't bother. You might want to consider the InfoSec pen testers course - that covers much more of what you'd do as a Pen Tester in the 'real world'

see the CEH exam was really just a typical cert test with what seemed like just higher than the security+ level questions. this offensive security one is a pure hack test to get the cert. my employeer is paying for it so i'm not out of pocket, but i think i'll enjoy this more than taking the CEH test and study material.

Correct me if am wrong as I thought the CEH is way intense and a lot higher cert when in comparison to the Security+ cert?
it is technically, but to me when doing the course work / study material, it seemed to come off more as security+ +. thats just my two cents, but i think this oscp will be much more intense. i was reading over at the ethicalhacker boards and they seem to think this is easily the best bang for the buck cert as far as course content and information learned. they do note that the cert doesn't really mean much in the industry, but it can add "fluff" to the old resume.
just in case anyone was wondering i started the course on monday and i have to say it is awesome. so much more interesting than the ceh was. even the course videos are exceptionally interesting, and muts is a very smart cat.
just an update, but last monday i took the offsec exam and passed. it took 22 hours to complete the hacking challenges, but was tons of fun. i highly recommend this course to anyone.
a good portion was old hat to me, but some of the items in the course are completely ridiculous and they're useful things that people just don't think about doing. so the point is that even though some of it is considered "extra mile" stuff it is still very good to do some research into and figure it out. the course itself makes you do independant study on a lot of the subject matter. the instruction is good and gives you the information that you need, but for sure no one is giving you the answer.
