how technical is SQL server

does designing and implementing SQL server involve maths. what kind of reasoning is involved?

Very technical. Not sure there's that much real math involved, but it does take quite a bit of logic.

Also undertstanding relational databases will be *much* easier if you have a grasp of relational algebra! It isn't a requirement, but I found it made things a *lot* clearer.

Not much maths is involved at all, but if you dont have previous knowledge of relational databases and SQL then reading up on that would help before starting SQL Server specific stuff.

Knowledge of relational algebra is not necessarily a requirement but an understanding of things like 3rd normal forms, UNIONS etc is helpful - I guess these things are mathematical in origin but you don't need to know the maths end of it for most tasks you will do in my opinion, although it may be interesting in its own right.
