Volunteering sites to get experience

    Hi all,

    There have been a few post asking "How to get experience".

    Alot of the time the answer is volunteer, ask your local school/college, family & friends, etc

    So I've decided to search round and post links to various sites for volunteers ('cuse if this has been done already):

    Whilst it's great to get 'real life' experience and most importantly helping those in need, I wonder (from the employer's perspective) if this would be relevant.

    If one is applying for a development job, wouldn't the employers be interested in projects one has participated in?
    Or does a general type of experience also count?

    I have been looking for junior C# developer jobs and the experience requirement varies from 6 months to a year. If I worked in a helpdesk, lets say, would that type of experience be beneficial to the employer?

    That depends entirely on environment, and possibly, luck of the draw. Although I personally would find it difficult to show you a company where the only IT work they did was helpdesk based.

    The way I work, it's helpdesk, sure, but I sit next to a .net developer and a programmer that works with a bazillion languages. I've even (somehow) managed to help out on VB issues with various scripts.

    I know that's not much experience, but the point is, the company probably has more IT scope than its helpdesk. If you can get your foot in the door and show your aptitude for programming, then sure, it could happen.

    At the bottom rung, any experience is good experience, IMO.

    I think your first sentence is spot on.

    What made me ask the question is the fact that I know some people, who work in the same department, develop in one thing only like win forms and another person doing web apps and both are using C#.

    I understand where you are coming from though.
