Hi there, cbaloch

Firstly, a warm welcome to CertForums. Second, CONGRATULATIONS on your A+ pass

Now to your main question - if your goal is MCSE and CCNA, I think most Folks around here would agree that it would probably be better to go for the straight Network+ before you go near any of the Security stuff.

In my humble opinion, you'd be better getting a good solid grounding in the basics of Networking, before you start specialising elsewhere. After all, thats what most of our work is all about anyway.

You'll get more opinions from some of the others shortly, but have you visited the New Members Forum to look around, and drop in a post if you fancy ?

Good luck, and hope to hear more from you soon

Hi cbaloch, welcome to the forums.

Jak is right cbaloch, if your working towards MCSE then i-Net+ and Security+ wont count towards it. But if you go for Network+ then together with your A+ you can use the certification combinations to substitute for an MCSA elective on route to MCSE.

Take a look here for the MCSA and here for the MCSE Windows 2000 Certification Requirements

Welcome to the boards. I'd have to agree with both Jak and Si. If you are going for your MCSA/E, then both the A+ and then either the Network+ or Server+ certs will apply towards those Microsoft certs. While the Net-I and Security+ certs are valuable, they won't directly help you achieve your goals.

Do you work in IT now? As you advance in getting your Microsoft certications, you'll find that they will become harder to pass unless you have some work or extensive lab experience with Microsoft operating systems both at the workstation and server level.

As far as choosing between Network+ and Server+, it just depends on what you want to emphasize more in your career. If you're more network and systems minded, take Network+. If you have more of an interest in servers and getting more information on hardware, choose Server +. I don't think you could go wrong on either one.

Good luck.

If you are looking at the cert trail from a point of view of taking the minimum amount of exams to gain an MCSE then go with the Security+ because it is actually an elective on both the MCSA & MCSE track.
Of course I've too much to suggest that SiFor should read his own links

Having said that I think the best option would be to move onto the Network+ as your next cert.
( Especially considering you also have your sights set on the CCNA )

The knowledge you should gain preparing for the Network+ will not only be a good introduction to the CCNA but it will also help put things nicely into perspective and give you the big picture as you start to tackle the Microsoft exams.

Interview Questions

Basic rule of thumb is to avoid asking questions that appear self-serving. Certainly you will be talking about things that are relevant to you at some point during the interview process – salary, job title, etc – but some things are just not a good idea to bring up during the interview.A job interview is not as difficult as a beginner may anticipate. It is common to be nervous to begin with but the interviewer will save the tough interview questions for the middle or end of the actual interview. They do not begin the interview with these questions because they want you to have the opportunity to relax a little bit so that you are able to produce well thought out answers.

Not sure how that's relevant to this thread as he was talking about doing the N+ and Sec+ also possibly the MCSE ... oh and that was 4 years ago.
