As a realistic person I realise that when (sooner or later) I hopefully land my first IT job I am going to be looking around the 14K salary

As someone who's basic is currently 20K plus bonus Is there any Government schemes in place to help me money wise?
I have a nagging missus (who works) and two kids.

Your opinions and experience well appreciated.

The way I look at it is at the moment I am on 20K+ granted. The problem is in my line there is no progression and in years to come I will still be on the equivlant of 20K. The other thing is I want to work in IT anyhow!

Thanks for the reply. It is good to hear your story. The company I work for does use IT on a very big scale which I know for a fact use a company that make software for them and also look after all the hardware too.
I think I might have a word with them and see what they say.

 

Wow! That's 176 pounds in terms of how I think. When I worked for the postal service, I was only required to be able to lift 70 pounds (31.82 kg) and pull a large, steel cargo container weighing 1500 pounds (681.82 kg).

 

Make buddies in that IT dept Boyce. It will help you down the road. And do you have any spare time to donate? If you do find a place that has low resource coming in. A charity organation or a gov program that has limited resources, And donate your time as a tech. You get to do hands on and improve your skills but you are also networking with other people in the field. You never know when these other resources may come in handy. Word of mouth goes along way. Plus chairty work always looks good on a resume.

 

Hi Mitz. The problem is although they have I.T people there 9-5 due to the size of the organisation I am 150 miles away from that office!

I will definately look into charity organisations though. I will let you know how I get on.

 

Well, I did the ten year stint as a van driver for a fruit merchant. The hours were great, in that I was finished for about 1-2ish every day, so could arrange for the wee one to be looked after to let me study in peace.

I'd say that let me get my first break into Helpdesk/ Tech Support. Unfortunately, that has ironically meant I haven't had the time to keep up with my certs, but I keep promising I'm gonna get back into it eventually - watch this space .....
