While running a virus check in Norton Antivirus I got this error.

Norton Antivirus has found 2 infected files.
    Norton has repaired 0 infections

    Httpdownloader.exe
    Download Trojan
    Repair failed

Could anyone tell me what I should do?

Also could not quarintine or delete these files at end of scan

    Thanks

Where are the files? It sounds like they are being prevented from being deleted by system restore. If thats the case then disable that then try again.

It's not really an error message. Norton did find two viruses but couldn't delete them. Go with Phil's suggestion first. You can also try and find out where they are on your system and delete them manually.

I turned off system restore and ran Norton again. But Norton still does not quarantine or delete the 2 infected files it finds. I also tried searching for the files manually on my computer, but could not find them. Does anyone have any other suggestions.

Let me clarify (sure AJ won't mind) ...

When you boot your PC, after the BIOS, and at the first stage (black screen) when Windows begins to load, press F8. You'll then be faced with a series of choices of safe/minimal modes of loading Windows. Select "Safe mode". This loads only the drivers and services require to run the OS, therefore avoiding loading any other apps/ services that may be causing your problem.

It will still allow you to perform tasks such as checking system status, installing software, etc, so if you are able to install your AV at this stage, you know that something else that's running during normal load of Windows is the cause of the problem.

    HTH :)

I'd suggest uninstalling it first, then carrying out the above.

    I was given this advice.

    Disable System Restore
    And Run Norton Antivirus
    If that doesn't work
Try searching for the files and deleting them manually
Could not find the files when I performed a search
You said get to safe mode and install Norton again
    I already have Norton installed.
I don't understand I am confused please help.

Just my opinion, but you should be able to do a file search to find the virus files Httpdownloader.exe and Download Trojan by clicking Start -> Search -> All Files and Folders. Make sure the Search System Folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders check boxes are checked. You can type the filename you are searching for such as "Httpdownloader.exe in both the All or part of the file name and A word or a phrase in the file fields. Then click the search button.

I had a similar problem once only with AVG. Turns out the viruses AVG was detecting were already in the virus vault (quarentined). I went in a deleted them manually and it was the end of the story. Just a suggestion.

When you run a scan and Norton detects the viruses, is there a way to determine the path to the location of the virus? It's been awhile since I had this problem...especially with Norton, and I can't recall exactly how it's displayed.

Also, you can download the free McAfee "Stinger" utility and run it on the affected computer to see if it can detect and remove the target viruses.

As far as running your computer in Safe Mode, you can first try to boot into Safe Mode and rerun Norton to see if this time, Norton can eliminate these files. The idea here is that some other process may be loading when you do a normal boot that is preventing Norton from deleting these files. By booting into safe mode, this other process will likely (or at least hopefully) be absent and will let you get rid of your unwelcome guests.

You can also try the Symantec site and search for the answer there. It's their product and this problem is probably in their Knowledge Base. Here's the link:

    http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/nav/

Just use the dropdown menu to choose the version of Norton AntiVirus you are using and click continue. That should lead you to links to their manuals and knowledge base. If you do a bit of digging, you just might find the solution yourself and I guarentee you if you do...you'll remember it very well.

This is IT troubleshooting in action, Professor. It can be very frustrating but also very rewarding to "hunt down" a problem and "make the kill". Let us know what you find out and please don't hesitate to continue to post about this problem. :)

EDIT: Also, I just need to be sure you successfully disabled system restore before. I'm sorry to be so redundant but sometimes making things work or not work can be difficult and even a little bewildering. Here's Norton's instructions on this particular issue:

Well try downloading Mcafee Stinger next where do I get it.
I ran Norton in Safe Mode and it didn't delete or quarantine the viruses.
Yes I made sure I disabled system restore.

    Thanks again

    Any other suggestions are welcome

Also download and run the free spyware removal program Lavasoft ADAWARE.

If the problem persists, try running Trend Micro's online virus scanner (free) - HOUSECALL.

I googled the httpdownload.exe file name and from the results, it appears to be malware, probably picked up from an unscrupulous web site.

As Jakamoko said, download AdAware and SpyBot Search and Destroy, update them to the latest definitions and scan your PC.

No one product can remove all viruses, and malware.
