Difference between ethernet address and IP address?

Hey

Can anyone please tell me what is ethernet address and its role in security. If someone knows my PC ethernet address, how would it affect my security? What can he do with that ethernet address?
I have some knowledge about IP address, many ways of tracing and hiding IP, but I don't know if ethernet address can also be traced. I really wanna know ethernet address is useful for what purpose? Thanks for any help.

When you say Ethernet address, do you mean MAC address?

An Ethernet hardware adress is the same as MAC address. you can change this thorugh MAC spoofing although as far as I understand it someone else can't unless they know it. However IP address spoofing is different where somone can trick you or your system into giving out your ip address and they therfore can play havoc with your system.

Is it possible to use something like Wireshark to obtain a MAC address?

not used it myself so I wouldn't know but there are apps out there so you can change the mac address to relate it to a specific vendor.

ipconfig /all will get you the MAC address on a local PC.

Also you can also get it from the ARP cache on a router\switch\firewall.

Ah thanks.

I think what i was getting at was, do packets contain the originators MAC address? I know that frames do.

The MAC address is only present in communication between devices in the same subnet. Once your frames leave your network it will have different data link layer data added.

You can also ARP from your own workstation, if you ping an address you can then find the MAC address for it.

ARP as in address resolution protocol?

Edit: ARP -a shows internet address and physical address.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was mistaken in thinking that the orginators MAC address went where ever the data went.
