Well, I was going to have a break from studying, but then I was thinking that I should really spend some time on Exchange 2007 considering the amount of time I spend on it at work. So I brought the book and I'm finishing off building my lab.

    Lab

    Server01 2003 Enterprise Edition 64Bit

Domain Controller, DNS, DHCP, File Server - 1GB RAM

    Server02 2003 Enterprise Edition 64Bit

    Exchange 2007 Server - 1.25GB RAM

    Client

    Windows XP, Office 2007 - 0.5GB RAM

On the Server's I have created Roaming Profiles, Scripts for Network Shares and configured my Active Directory strucure to have a OU's for XP Clients, Server, Employees with sub OU's off Accounts, Administrators, Sales & Marketing Department.

Just finishing off the patching, then will take a couple of snapshots and start Exchange 2007 installation.

I was going to use Server 2008 64 Bit, but my laptop which I run all the VMware's on could do with a wipe and reload, hence the choice of Server 2003 64 Bit which is less resource intensive.

I'm running a HP Laptop with the following specs:

    - Windows 7 64Bit Ultimate
    - AMD Turion 64 x 2 2.00GHz
    - 4GB RAM
    - 256MB Graphics Card
    - 17" Display
    - 23" External Display

The laptop is a couple of years old now, it's only really slow when I run 4 x Virtual Machines, 3 works OK.

Maybe next year, I might get some sort of HP ML, but for now, I can't really justify the expense.

Once thats done, I'm going to take some more snapshots and call it day.

Lol, just read that mate whilst I was waiting for .NET Framework 2.0 to install!

Think I will need a rethink of my RAM Mappings, perhaps the following:

    - Windows 7 Host 1GB RAM
    - Server01 0.75GB RAM
    - Server02 2GB RAM
    - XP Client 0.25GB RAM

The XP Client will probably only be used for Mailbox Configuration and Permissions.

Windows 7 only supports 32Bit VPC's so thats a no go.

I'm using VMware Server as this supports 64Bit O/S's.

...do keep in mind there is a 32bit version of exchange 07 for non-production use, for me this was a life saver as finances didnt allow for a 64bit host back then.
When I studied I had a 2.6Ghz, 4GB laptop running XP and everything was dandy until I installed edge server on a VC and then rather ignorantly tryed to install a trial of forefront...what was I thinking!!! the machine locked up "good 'n propa"!!

Up and down tbh. Just not had a clear run at it due to work commitments. Starting to put more time into it now and I have one Exchange 2007 migration lined up before Xmas and two in the new year so I will get some more experience using Exchange 2007.

This is not Exchange 2007 related, but it is Exchange 2003.

Well, I have just finished pulling my hair out and I cannot believe I overlooked this.

Today, I had to get an SSL installed for OWA, using IIS6, I configured a request from a Certificate Authority and used there current A record so it would be implemented without any delays. Installed the Certificate and then tested. I was prompted with the OWA Screen, so Form Based Authentication was working, but after logging in, I recieve Access Forbidden 403.

    So I did the following:

    - Restarted the Default Website
    - Confirmed all Permissions are correct in IIS
    - Confirmed Directory Browsing in Exchange Virtual Server
    - Took off 443 and added 443 back on Default Website (have had to do this before).
    - Rebooted Router and took out Port Forward & ACL for 443 and readded.
    - Deleted the Default Website using IIS Metafram Resources
    - Recreated Default Website after restarting Exchange System Attended and re-applied all permissions

So after some dinner, and with a clear head, I start looking at this again and then a light goes on, let me check the User Accounts in AD.

Some fu**er had disabled OWA under Exchange Features, enabled this and guess what it freakin works.

Note to self, check this before anything else in future.

    Exchange Server Roles:

    Edge Transport

Used in your DMZ to filter out traffic and SPAM and provide an access mechanism to your Hub Transport Severs. Edge Transport Servers are not part of Active Directory, instead they use ADAM (Active Directory Application Mode). Edge Transport Servers Similar to Front End Servers in Exchange 2003.

    Hub Transport

Can be used to send and recieve email regardless of whether you have Edge Transport role installed. Provides routing between Sites (Exchange 2003 Bridgehead Server).

    Client Access

Used a link between OWA or Active Sync to access the clients Mailboxes. Basically, you install this to offload the processing of things such as SSL onto anoth Server so that your Mailbox Server can do exactly what it says on the tin.

    Mailbox Server

Holds all Mailboxes and Public Folders

Do it mate, best investment I ever made, VM's on a few HD's in it and runs like a beast. ML115 2.2GHz G5 £218 something on Dabs mate, by far the cheapest. Get the full 8GB for it mate and its like a rocket, quad core and all that.

    http://www.dabs.com/products/hp-proliant-ml115-g5-opteron-1354-qc-1gb-160gb-dvd-63FX.html?q=ml115

Get your woman to buy you it for christmas mate, its an investment in your career :D Mine's running Raid 5, I've got a hardware cisco firewall and all kinds at home now ha ha You owe it to yourself!!!!!
