For the last two weeks I have been a Volunteer in a busy IT dept. in a hospital. There are only 18 staff to maintain 2600 users.

I have been a bit quiet on the posting front of CF and I expect some of the members here have welcomed that!

It's quiet an eye opener I was given the oportunity to work along side Network engineers, IT help desk and PC support engineers.

It's a fast paced environment, but the staff a very friendly and laid back! If a computer goes down in the A & E ward you have to drop everything and go. It's life and death up there because the NHS relies on computers for everything!

Anyway, the MM book states the one thing that is cheap but invaulable is the notebook and how right he is.

While replacing one PC on the job lists I was approached by another department who wanted a printer connected to the network another wanted a new keyboard and another couldn't get a password to work. If hadn't had a notebook on me I couldn't of written down their names, dept. PC numbers.

However, in MM book it describes a section on ESD and yet in the PC hardware dept. I never see them wearing a Anti static strap! They install Ram, HD, Network cards, PSU yet they never wear those straps or have ESD mats?

So after two weeks, I thought I was going to get the goldern handshake and big boot out the door!

But they have asked me back...

I said I would love to but Volunteer work doesn't pay the bills.

Errr..no I don't think you understand they said.
We want you to come back on contract and yes we will pay you!

What I cried get paid for doing something I like...Wow there's a novelty!

So now I am a PC support hardware engineer!

I am still studying my A+ but now I have a job in IT.

Yippeee!!!!

On the ESD thing.. i never worm one either but i touch the case every now and then or lean on it.

TIP TO EVERYONE: - now particularly when its summer and hot if you going to do any PC building take note of this because 90% of the time it happens. When you open the box that the PC case/tower comes in and remove the packets and what not on the new case BEFORE you touch anything else touch the case or some metal object the amount of ESD you get taking the case out of the box is hefty and will cause damage to the next parts you will open.

On the ESD thing - in many places they say you should - but in reality don't bother. As the straps are so cheap it is probably worthwhile buying one and wearing it, even if it doesn't get clipped on much.

If there is a sudden audit you may get bonus points!

Excellent success story mate, goes to show that voluntary work can literally *pay* off, if you are good at the job and conscientious then why would they let you walk away?
