Ok Neil here is an update. I am flat out stuck already on page 4. I will start at the Beginning and work forward to where I am at.
First thing that I notice on page 2 at step 2, is that you do not instruct your audience how to do a back fill nor instruct them how to add a new layer.
In step 3, well, I am just not sure what you are doing. I love that you have the pictures showing the Layers Style Dialog box. However you are just assuming that beginners are paying attention to the name at the top of each box as you go though the drop shadow, the inner shadow and so on. You need to explain to them that they need to actually click on the selection name that they want to work in not just check the box beside each item. Yes you do have each option highlighted, but they are not going to realize this is NOT just highlighted to show them where you are at.
Now to where I am stuck at is this same section with your last box. I know that it is the gradient editor box but I do not understand what you are doing in it or how you created your gradient. Well I do understand the concept of how to do it. I've not had to do it yet. How many newbies do you know though, that would know to double click on the bottom color stops? A newbie would have no idea what this box is or how you accessed it. And when I add my colors the color is just staying black.
In step 5 you are back in the gradient editor for a white to transparent gradient. Why not just have them hit the D key to make sure their foreground and background colors are set to default. Then select the X key making the foreground color white, select the gradient tool, then in the gradient option tool bar have them choose the 2nd gradient option of foreground to transparent. These are basic steps that they will use over and over again.
I know your plans are to teach Photoshop to others, that is why I have gone into such details here. I want yours to be the best out there, where people will feel great about your site because they are moving forward in their learning not becoming aggravated because steps have been left out and go seeking other material somewhere else. Never assume that they know a step. As newbies we don't. That is why we are on your site looking at your tutorials and training material. And let me tell you, good detail help in Photoshop is very hard to find, whether it be free or paid for.

Thank you very much for being honest and straight to the point. I know i was being a bit naive to think newbies know how to do things that you have pointed out. So, i will most definitely address those points and get right back to you with a more of a step by step instead of a hop skip and a jump tutorial!!
I am guessing you are quite new to photoshop and i can't really say i am an expert( not until i pass my ACE exam), so perhaps if i post more tutorials, you can try them out and give me your verdict like you have?? That way we can both learn from each other?

I would love to test drive your new tutorials and provide feedback. Belive me only a couple of months ago I was banging my head on the wall because of all the bad tutorials that are out there for newbies. It should be illegal for people to produce crap like that for people just starting out! To be honest Lesa King at graphic reporter.com saved not only my sanity but kept me trying to figure out photoshop. I was really at the point of removing photoshop from my computer. Her tutorials are great and she introduce me to kelby training and I think I am moving along fine now thanks to those resources.

Sorry, i didn't mean to label you a newbie! I only meant that you haven't had Photoshop for long, which i think sounds better.
And i know what you mean about all the hard to follow tutorials out there, as i have over the last few months, came across many. Personally i have learn't Photoshop visually using video tutorials from sites such as kelby training, lynda.com, tutvid.com and vtc training. Also the bulk of what i have learn't was from the top man himself Mark Monciardini.
So, i do find it hard to explain how to do something in writing without the risk of loosing someones attention. Otherwise i would waffle on all day. That's why when i do get myself up and running i will be producing video tutorials as well. That way i can really explain what needs doing.
