Master Class 01 Reloaded : Fedora Core 4

Attention Certforum Members!

The 1st Certforums Master Class will begin soon, it will cover the basic operation of Fedora Core 4 (Linux) so all those of you new to linux this is the class for you!
It will cover installation, the gui, service configuration, package management and basic windows integration (along with a few other things)

There are a few things that will be required to take part in this Master Class, but dont worry, all steps will be accompanied by videos, screen shots and user comments included so you can follow along at your own pace

here is a list of basic requirements

VMWare Worksation installed on Windows XP/2k Professional
Decent Processor & Memory (Memory >= 512mb)
Appx 10GB Free Hard Disk Space
A Broadband internet connection
Fedora Core 4 DVD ISO (binary) available here

I will try and concoct a quick VMWare Primer for those new to it who want to take part, class is expected to start soon

More info can be found here

Re: Master Class 01 : Fedora Core 1

Well count me in for this one, I just need to download the Fedora Core 1 CDs and I'm all set to go. This a great idea and its really good to see some life back in the Lab Partners Forum.

Good work Pheonix.

What's on the third CD? just out of curiosity.

Good work Pheonix.I'll be sorted with extra disk space by mid-week, so will download the CD's now.

Can't wait for this to get going

Re: Master Class 01 : Fedora Core 1

Totally agreed - great idea and effort, Phoenix. Unfortunately, that sound you hear is me lodged firmly in the back seat, as although I have a couple of distros of Linux, my system is nowhere near up to scratch for this Lab.

However, good luck to all who participate, and I'll be watching this with interest.

Well I heard there was a secret chord, That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?

Well it goes like this, The fourth, the fifth - The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

.... and yes, I did have this as my Sig way before all that X-factor crap ...

Re: Master Class 01 : Fedora Core 1

CD3 just has extra packages on, but were doing a very minimal install so you can get used to installing extra packages and such
so you can save the 700mb download
if you want a complete CD set for your collection feel free to download it also

So I've started a new job and have a bit more stable schedule these days, so I would like to pick up this, it was an exciting and challenging project for me, and it demanded alot of my time, however situations changed and I ended up dropping it by the way side (I always seem to take on more than I can manage hehe), With the recent development and release of Fedora Core 4, and VMWare 5s ability to record videos, I have decided that perhaps this would be a better way of formatting the master class, and so I will pilot this with an installation class that steps through the GUI, Hopefully I can tie this together with a voice over and walk people through it step by step, wish me luck!!

I know this means redownloading stuff for some of you due to the new relelase and all, but in all fairness FC1 is a good few years old now, I think it makes sense to update the stuff for the newest release, especially as it works (as opposed to some of the previous ones)

the DVD iso is a 2.5GB download, you could download the CDs but its simpler if we all have the same DVD image, i hope you dont all have download limits!

Edit: Damn I just did the audo naration to the VMWare recorded video and i sound like a complete dork, maybe its because its 2am, or maybe i just ALWAYS have this wierd accent when recording myself (hence why i hate answer machines)

Also Windows movie maker turned my 14mb AVI into some 50mb file when i added audio, seems a bit wierd :/

Im gonna go over it a few times before I post a link, maybe I can avoid sounding like a complete dork, or get someone else to do the voice over!

Edit: Waayyyy tooo dorky to post at present, ill re do the audio score and see how it sounds then! lol

Found this at Howtoforge.com. "The Perfect Fedora Core 4 Set up". Thought it might provide an interesting read:

I thought this article on the Yum Extender would be interesting for those of you working with FC4.

This is dependant on the system you will be installing on

if its a standard Intel or AMD system then yes i386 is the one

if you have one of those Athlon64 systems you might want the IA64 version
