I am praticing the lasso tool in PS on a duplicated picture and when I get almost done the dam picture goes white and everything disappears! when I try to go below to click back on the pic the lasso follows me ruining everything I have just done but the picture comes back. Its not just that picture either I had the orignal open too and my palettes even go blank but to a gray color not white. Anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong that makes everything dissappear? I've done it twice now with the same results!

No I had to actually click on the pictures title bar to make everything come back. I did a disk clean to see if that might help. I did a different picture but it was trying to act up again at the end. I honestly think it is something I am doing, do I have no idea what. I don't know if it is something with my scroll mouse or what.

How big is the picture? File size not screen size. Also, what do you have for memory on your machine, and how many other open windows, i.e. other processes, do you have running at the same time. It almost sounds to me like you're running out of memory.
To do large photos in PS I'd say you need at least 2-3 gigs of ram if you're doing anything else at the same time. Since I moved to 8 gigs of ram on my lab machine it's a whole lot faster than it was even with 4 gigs, but then I normally have a database server, a couple of web servers, a plone instance or two, music playing, and an email client or two open at the same time.

I do only have 1 gig of ram on here, but it doesn't do it on lappy and it only has one gig and it shares with the graphic card. Thats why I was thinking it was me.

But, what all do you have running in the background on your desktop that you don't have running on your laptop? How many processes using how much ram? Take a look at Task Manager and see while working on both machines to see how they are handling memory, and how much unused memory both of them have at the point where you're getting failure on your desktop.

Hi, what version of PS are you using? If you are using an older version, then try downloading a 30 day trial of CS3 and see if it still happens. If so, then it's your PC. I just had a little play with the lasso tool and i couldn't figure out whats happening. Another thing....to prevent the lasso following you as you go across your image...press ESC first.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Appreciate the escape key. Never even thought of that. I do have cs3 but I think freddy was right with my memory and everything running in the background. When I shut most of it down it has not happen since. So I need to invest in another gig this summer. Thanks everyone for the advice and information. Much appreciated.
