Yes thats right, I'm getting ready to build and these are the components I've chosen. It's based mainly around the idea that I'll use multiple VMs to do the daily business and some gamiong in the off times.

The only thing I'm really not sure on is the power supply. Does anyone have any other recommendations for a very quiet power supply?

The other thing is about RAM, I might look at getting this instead (Patriot DDR3 2G,PC10666
1333MHz,CL7,(Kit-of-2)Low-Latency (7-7-7-20) ) but I don't know much about Patriot. If I had to guess then it would be in the same class as OCZ, Corsair, Kingston and Mushkin.?

Nice set up mate...that should do the trick for you...as for PSUs, I have a 700W Thermaltake PSU which is modular...and the only fan I can hear from the gaming machine is the CPU one never mind the fact that I have 6 case fans which barely make a noise too...

Like Noel said nice set up But not sure about Hard Drive, Western Digital?? I have had problems with them in the past. I usually go for Seagate, but then again maybe WD is cheaper if you have to stick to a Budget Nugget???

That will make a very nice machine, good selections. I have 6 WD hard drives, they are nice and quiet, and have all been very reliable. As for quiet power supplies, I have a modular Hiper Type-R. Its got a big fan in the base and a smaller exhaust fan on the rear. Its as good a silent. I think most power supplies are pretty quiet these days, get one with plenty of power to spare, If its working its nuts off to power all your fans and HDDs it will get hotter than a more powerful supply thats just ticking over. More heat, more fan RPMs, more noise.

as already said, nice spec, however you might want more than 2GB for multiple VMs? also unless you need to have DDR3, you could get a lot more for DDR2, but it's your choice at the end of the day

Also with the hdd, the RE2 edition drives are very good in raid, however for a single drive I would recommend the AAKS model of drives.

If you wanted to save a little bit and maybe have a go at overclocking for some extra performance, maybe something along these lines?

That little lot comes in at £600 Delivered in the UK, just something else to look at as the performance difference with DDR3 vs DDR2 isnt really worth the extra cost, but thats my 2p

Lovely setup and like someone else mentioned just some more ram and you truly are set to go. In terms of power supply I have got the arctic power 600w psu, note it only has one sata connector so you'd need a converter.

It's fine with me and pretty quite too and really got it owing to having a pci express slot for my video graphics card. So far so good

Nice rig nugget if I were you I'd go for the faster processor like the QX9450 but still a nice setup especially with the DDR3

UCM, I don't really have a budget but I have around £8-900. I like the Raid Edition of the WD disks, I even have all my servers packed with them. I chose it because I leave my system on 24/7 except for updating.

Nightwalker, thanks for the tip on the power supply. Never thought about it that way before. Unfortunately I can't get Hiper here so something else is on the cards.

madman, with the RAM, I meant to put in 2x (4GB) but it got lost in the editing. The motherboard that I want will only take DDR3 so I'm limited there.

GBL, the place where I normally buy my hardware doesn't have the 9450 (yet) but I found another place that does (for a hundred more).


I'm also looking that this machine takes me through the next 3 years so I'm going to get the best I can afford at the moment. Like I said, you guys will bankrupt me, but I'll be happy.

Like the rig up until you look at the HDD, nothing that an LSI MegaRaid SAS card cant sort out

Just my 2p, the QX9450 is probably better if you can stretch to it
Also, the 8800GTS (new version - 512MB RAM) for ~£180 will out perform the 8800GT. The 9800GTX might be worth a shufti too (although it doesn't significantly outperform either 8800 models).
The GT's an excellent card though, I guess it depends on whether or not you think 1GB on the GC is necessary (personally I don't, but it's not my PC ;) )

They should be within range if the budget's 8-900 quid.

I read a comparison last night that asked the same question. The conclusion was that the 512MB card was quicker and that the 1GB card brought too few advantages to the table to justify the expense. I think I'll be getting the GTS then.

24/7? you must need some serious cooling for that beast!

Not really. I don't have anything other than 3 case fans, 1 at the front to bring the air in over the 3 hard disks, 1 on the side to blow directly on the passive cooled graphics card and 1 at the back to take the warm air out (plus the 1 in the PSU).

I must admit that it does run a little warm but that is also due to the whole PC being enclosed in a 'cupboard' similar to the one below. Mine is rectangular and is open at the back where the pc sits but I can close the doors and hide the whole thing away.
