If ever there was a value-less cert, the CIW is it. It sure isn't worth spending thousands and thousands of $$$ or pounds on. The same goes for Photoshop certification (unless you're teaching it, in which case it's justifiable).

Why do a course at all? Why not just buy a bunch of books and also use the 'net to supplement them?

Harry.

i would have thought if i did a course it would have shown that i have knowledge of web design but from reading around i have read that maybe just learning the skills and making a portfolio would be a better option. would you reccomend i just learn the skills hbroomhall? thanks for taking your time to help me

The thing that might show your knowledge would be the CIW cert - but you don't need to do a course to get one, as I've said before.

The portfolio would be even better - you would show that you can design and build sites and that it isn't just book-learning.

Harry.

If you were an employer who was looking to hire a Web developer, would you hire someone who took a Web design course and had a bunch of certifications, or would you hire someone who shows you a portfolio of their work?
