Layers question

Is this correct:

Repeaters operate at Layer 1

Bridges operate at layer 2

switches operate at layer 2

Hubs operate at layer 1

Routers operate at layers 3

Gateway operates at layer 5?

NIC operates at layer 1

I did do a search on Google but some were in different layers so I was not sure which was right.

The snag is that these days these are a bit variable!
Gateways can operate at layer 7 or higher.
NICs can operate at both Layer 1 and 2.

Gateways will be level 7 or lower... you can't go higher than 7 can you?

With gateway, won't where it sits in the OSI model be pretty much based on whether it is hardware or software too?

Well - yes and no! When you use an app you are using layer 7 API (in theory) - the application layer. So you must be at a higher level!

As a joke layer 8 is often used for users - see here.

But I confess that I think that was a typo!

Indeed - there are no hard and fast rules for that.

But consider an ALG in a router. What layer is is running at?....

There are switches that can reside in Layer 2 and 3.
If you’re trying to understand the different OSI layers, you’ll probably be fine in what you stated above.

Try to remember what each layer is responsible for. Placing items in categories becomes easier from that point.

Heh heh... I read into the rest of it too... I like to think in terms of CKB btw... Chair Keyboard Interface... not so many letters.

Well, I would have guessed at Layer 7...
