This is impressive. Take a look at the following link. There is a video about 25 minutes long that walks you through an install and how to use Linux MCE. I'd recommend downloading the video and watching it from your pc as the servers streaming the video are getting hammered--there are multiple repositories located around the world to download from.

Here is a link to the home page for the Linux MCE project. The list of features is pretty amazing. Two years ago an ordinary Linux user couldn't even get mythtv working, and took experienced people a few days to set it up.

The pace at which open source projects are moving is incredible.

i havent looked at the hardware spec requirements.. im guessing the Linux MCE setup would require a lot less?

I'm guessing it would. I was going to install it on my laptop just to see. It sounds as if it uses compiz so it might not work too well with ATI cards and that's what my laptop has, but I haven't looked that far into it myself either.

Brilliant Linux is certainley comming along for the home user, pretty soon there'll be no need for windows (there isnt really anyway) because linux will support all your hardware and do anything windows does!

Is this actually a linux person that is saying something negative about linux because they are giving their honest opinion?

Come on guys, I am really glad that open source is coming along for those of you who love this OS. But before you start slamming MS how about doing a comparinson of both first? 2 big linux users going I am guessing does not cut it.

As someone who's struggled with a MythTV box (among others), it does look like the market could shift a little. I'll set one up just to see, even though I have (and use) a Technet sub. However, I really hope they expand their 'HCL' -- that was the primary issue getting Linux to cooperate in the first place (i.e. TV/tuner/capture cards).

Now, if you're thinking that an older machine with Linux MCE will contend with a newer box with Windows MCE -- you'd be hard-pressed to see that. I would say they would require very similar hardware, especially when dealing in A/V. Moving in realtime, with timeshift and other features, is NOT for second hand hardware. Case-in-point: I setup an UbuntuStudio box for my church to record their services, on an old P3 800EB, with 512MB of RAM. With 1 incoming stream recording, this machine slows to a crawl. Not good.

This bears repeating, to prevent some from misunderstanding -- I am NOT saying Windows is better, just that both need decent hardware to run. Additionally, Windows support is very well-established (greenbutton.com, etc) in the MCE arena, and since MCE2005 (w/ rollup), it is a VERY difficult package to beat. For us techies, the Linux alternatives are already cutting into Windows, and this might open the gap wider. For regular consumers, I don't see it as viable YET, even though the FIIRE stuff looks nice.
