CCNA Here we go!!!

Well my book arrived yesterday.. This is the one im starting off with:

Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices, Part 1 (ICND1): CCNA Exam 640-802 and ICND1 Exam 640-822 (Self-Study Guide)

Now i went through the book and there is something that impressed me. This book doesnt cover exam objectives - It helps you prepare for the CCENT by slowly introducing the reader to Cisco and Networking which helps you under stand the objectives for this book:

CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide (CCENT Exam 640-822 and CCNA Exam 640-802) (Exam Certification Guide)

which im guessing i will have to get as well. So if anyone remembers this was one of the questions what the difference was between the two different books. And i guess thats why the difference in price as well. Im happy with this because i can still carry on preparing for my CCENT from a foundation level because i dont have the time to dedicate to moe studying.

Another thing im struggling with is the hands on. Im a little tight on budget so getting some cisco kit at the moment is a little impossible. But im looking to get a simulation enviroment because that would be ok for the book i have now and hopefully when the summer comes ill have some extra cash to get cracking! Well i guess no time frame to complete this but i would like to get it done by the end of Sept

Anyone time to get cracking and hopefully be back with questions!!!

zimbo,

The purposes of the Self-Study Guide and the Exam Certification Guide are related but different. The Self-Study Guide is supposed to be a self-paced course to learn the material. This is because only current or prospective Cisco Partner employees are required to be Cisco Certified otherwise you're welcome to understand Cisco technology at a self-study pace without becoming Cisco certified. Once you've learned the material, you move on to the Exam Certification Guide which is focussed on taking and passing the exam. That's why stuff like the exam objectives map is included in the Exam Certification Guide.

Good luck in your CCNA studies.

Best of luck for the CCNA mate. Its on my to do list to so I`ll annoy you with questions later!

Me: You need to buy a couple of servers.
Customer: Whats wrong with the servers I have?
Me: Well, you dont have *any* servers just now.
Customer: WTF! I thought I did!

I started the CCNA last summer. I'm still reading about it.

I'm finding a little CD-ROM video I got a hold of very interesting (I don't want to mention it by name in case there are rules against advertising and such but if you want to know about it I'll happily let you know via email if you PM me).

I'm at the point now where it's slowly starting to make more and more sense as the weeks go by and the questions I want to ask are getting more and more specific. No doubt I will ask many of them on this forum over the coming months.

I've found the CCNA to be a great topic and to be quite honest, I'm hoping to pass it so that I can move onto the more advanced topics like CCNP.

I want to make subnetting feel as natural as possible to me in the mean time though, as well as Access Lists and so on.

I recommend learning slowly and surely. I personally feel comfortable understanding things upside down and inside out before I move on, though other people may like to move differently.

Like r.h.lee mentioned…
In the Ciscopress collection the ‘Self-Study Guide’ thoroughly explains concepts and usually includes labs. The ‘Exam Certification Guide’ is to prepare for the specific exam concepts but doesn’t go into labs / assignments. If you’ve got Cisco experience (work or self-study) and don’t need labs but need to review Cisco materials for the exam – go with Exam Certification Guide right away. Otherwise start with the Self-Study and then Cert Guide.

Good Luck with the…
