Look around the forum and see how many people are starting off with an MCSE? The vast majority right?
No, I wouldn't say the vast majority of people are starting off with an MCSE. The vast majority of uninformed people are pursuing the MCSE without experience... but that's not to say that a majority of techs are getting the MCSE without experience.

Even if they were... if a bunch of techs were jumping off a tall bridge, would you follow? Of course not. Just because everyone else does it doesn't mean you should make the same mistakes.

The MCSE is *not* often asked for on your first job role. Would you like for me to take the painstaking amount of time it would take to drag up numerous links of examples on job search sites?

In any case... if an employer is so uninformed that they don't know that an MCSE doesn't do entry-level work, then that's probably not an employer you want to work for!

Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm currently getting experience working on a helpdesk, and looking to move on to better paid jobs when I get more experience/certs. Am now pursuing the XP MCP exam. This thread seems to have gone into the perennial debate about the worth of certs, particularly certs without experience. I am assuming that certs are basically helpful in getting a job (otherwise why would anyone bother to do them, it surely can't all be a waste of time and money?)

So good luck everyone with your careers, I hope to report many more passes!

Yep, they are certainly helpful in getting a job. Experience trumps certifications, but certifications can be the deciding factor when an employer is weighing two similar individuals.

Additionally, certifications can open employment doors that are otherwise closed to uncertified individuals. But, as I mentioned before, an employer won't be looking for an MCSE who doesn't have ANY experience.
