VMWare Server is free, but does not contain all of the features that VM Workstation has.

As for your other questions Phoenix would be the best person to ask.

I'm just trying to visualise where the two products would be used and in what context. i.e Having a small test network all on one host computer - A virtual version of Windows 2003 (or SBS 2003) + 2 or 3 virtual XP workstations.

In terms of having 2 or 3 virtual copies of XP installed on the host computer I gather then that you still need to have the required number of licenses irrespect as to wether you are using Virtual PC or VMWare.

Workstation and Server can both be used in a 'test' environment, however workstation has more features useful for this such as multiple snapshots for quick recovery etc

you can't have both installed on the same host as far as I am aware, they conflict with each other

you will still need applicable licenses however for a demo i recommend getting hold of the trial copies.. whilst you may not be able to download trials of Xp anymore some of the training books may well come with one
