i re-installed ubuntu last night so the lay out on the hard disk is..
C: - vista
D: & E: - i set ubuntu to guided installation so i assume it installed these other 2 partitions.
both o/s' boot fine but i've got more problems with ubuntu, firstly when i ran the updates it said there was none even though when i installed it before it had 120mb of them to do, firefox still wont let me log into forums and i can't install anything now either. i downloaded amsn onto the desktop and last time i ran "sudo apt-get install amsn" and it was fine but now it keeps saying E: coulnt find package amsn". it does this when i try to install browser plugins too

I'm at a loss, grim. I've never had these problems with Ubuntu or any other Linux distro. Granted, it's been years since I've done a dual-boot configuration, but even then, I don't recall these issues.
I hate to throw in the towel, but I'm going to suggest that you post the issue at the ubuntu forums:
Since, by definition, the forum is populated with a bunch of ubuntu users, someone there may have come across this issue and be able to help (of course, Freddy could be along here any second and solve the whole thing). Whatever solution or set of steps to take from here, please post them so we can all benefit.
You know, I wish my parents played Mozart when I slept because half the time I don't even know what the heck anyone's talking about!
If you let Linux have it's way during install, it will create two partitions, a swap partition and a data partition. My guess is that's the two additional drive letters you see. The confusion is that Windows uses drive letters but Linux uses directories (everything in Linux is a file including devices). I can't find your particular situation documented (though my Google skills might not be honing in on the right areas). I did find plenty available on dual booting XP and Ubuntu, but in the 2005-2006 date range. You might want to compare your process to these links and see if there are any "gotchas" that you might have missed:

I don't get it. Why did you download amsn onto your desktop? apt-get installs from the network not from your hard disk or your desktop. If you manually download .deb packages from the Ubuntu repositories you have to use dpkg to install them. Also, how are you trying to install extensions and themes in Firefox?
Post what is in the /etc/apt/sources.list file.

i have a guide that i printed off at work that list loads of plugins for the browser so im typing them in and they're downloading and installing.
