Customer: Whats wrong with the servers I have?

Yes it is mate.
All seems to be sorted now. I restored the system a while back and now only occasionally the laptop doesn't connect, but a restart sorts it, annoying though. What is also annoying is the fact that once connected, if the laptop is left to enter sleep mode, upon resume I find that it will either not connect at all until a restart or it takes like 10 - 15 minutes to connect. Seems like a service or two stop running when the laptop sleeps and then take forever to start again once resumed. I don't know, just an idea.

Hmm, if the laptop finally manages to connect itself then at least it is working. What is the performance of the laptop like after you take it out of sleep mode? Does it run slow? Also is the laptop going into standby or hibernate mode?

No performance drop at all after resuming. As far as my power plan tells me, it is certainly sleep mode the laptop goes into, no standby or hibernate. Just a quick reminder that I am using Vista in case that helps.
click start and run and then type "cmd" and press enter
type "ipconfig" this should bring up all your networking details and you should be able to see if you have an I.P address or not.
to release the I.P address type "ipconfig /release" and then press enter. then to renew the I.P type "ipconfig /renew" and then enter. you can then see if and what the I.P has changed to by typing "ipconfig" and enter again.
