169 is the default APIPA IP address range although you can change this manually if required.

When you do get an IP address but you cant connect to the internet is the IP address in your defined LAN subnet?

Me: You need to buy a couple of servers.
Customer: Whats wrong with the servers I have?
Me: Well, you dont have *any* servers just now.
Customer: WTF! I thought I did!

As far as i know there are only these addresses for internal networks (private)

10.x.x.x (class A)

127.x.x.x (loopback (wasted range)

172.16.x.x Class B

192.168.x.x Class C

192.254.x.x APIPA
Er - <cough> - no. APIPA *is* on the 169 address. A quick google will confirm this. Like here.

According to my A+ AIO 6th edit 169 is APIPA 192 is static and 192 is what you want.

Just looked it up to verify what I had said was correct.

Yes it is mate.

All seems to be sorted now. I restored the system a while back and now only occasionally the laptop doesn't connect, but a restart sorts it, annoying though. What is also annoying is the fact that once connected, if the laptop is left to enter sleep mode, upon resume I find that it will either not connect at all until a restart or it takes like 10 - 15 minutes to connect. Seems like a service or two stop running when the laptop sleeps and then take forever to start again once resumed. I don't know, just an idea.

Hmm, if the laptop finally manages to connect itself then at least it is working. What is the performance of the laptop like after you take it out of sleep mode? Does it run slow? Also is the laptop going into standby or hibernate mode?

There are no problems that cannot be solved through suitable application of high explosives !

No performance drop at all after resuming. As far as my power plan tells me, it is certainly sleep mode the laptop goes into, no standby or hibernate. Just a quick reminder that I am using Vista in case that helps.

click start and run and then type "cmd" and press enter

type "ipconfig" this should bring up all your networking details and you should be able to see if you have an I.P address or not.

to release the I.P address type "ipconfig /release" and then press enter. then to renew the I.P type "ipconfig /renew" and then enter. you can then see if and what the I.P has changed to by typing "ipconfig" and enter again.
