Pointing Outlook to a different mail server

Hi,

Here's a little problem that's puzzling me with my home lab.

I have Exchange setup on a server (Exch01) and in Outlook 2003 I have setup my email account pointing to Exch01.mydomain.local.

I've now added a new DNS entry called mail.mydomain.local and mapped it to the same internal IP as Exch01.

I've gone into the account settings in Outlook and changed the mail server to mail.mydomain.local. When I open Outlook it connects to the mail server fine, but when I check the server name in the account settings, it's pointing at Exch01 again.

I tried creating a new account in Outlook and pointing at mail.mydomain.local and the mail server changes back to Exch01.mydomain.local again!

Can anyone enlighten me as to where I am going wrong? I'm thinking that maybe because the DNS entry still exists for Exch01 that this is causing some confusion with Outlook?

Cheers!

If you put in the IP address of the server and then select 'check name', what name appears?

I think it is meant to show the server name anyway and 'mail' is obviously not the name of the server.

Me: You need to buy a couple of servers.
Customer: Whats wrong with the servers I have?
Me: Well, you dont have *any* servers just now.
Customer: WTF! I thought I did!

Ah right, that would make sense!

Cheers Sparky

ping Exch01 and see what is resolves to - should say: pinging blah.blah.com...etc before the IP replies come in!
