Seen this deal on techhead last week, a little heads up, the DVD-Rom isn't supported in ESXi 4.1(inc: 4.1u1)/vSphere Hypervisor 4.1(inc: 4.1u1)

Just as a taught, wouldn't VMware workstation 7.3? As this would save you money on the hardware as well as space in your house. I have recently acquired VMware workstation 7.3 and would try various 64 bit operating systems as well as ESXi 4.1 and would let you all know how it went.

The only thing that bothers me about the VMWare workstation is that when you log off, it closes the VMs. I personally hate having to start up everything, especially when you have a big lab, it's just time consuming. You could do a small hack to run the VM's as a service, but I don't know if it can be done with version 7.3. Ohh and it's not free.

 

You could do that as well but doing so mean you wouldn't be able to test certain things, think DRS, Directpath and maybe even FT

Is this a negative then or is there a work around?

 

Just swap the drive out bud after you install ESXi you'll probably never use the drive anyway so you could burn an ESXi image onto a USB and forget about the DVD-Rom altogether

Server arrived today and had to drag it from work via the train. Well certainly not a good idea and would not be doing that again in the future

Isn't running ESXi on a USB stick creates a single point of failure? I've always used two drives in RAID 1 for the ESXi hypervisor and used an iSCSI target for LUNs, etc... Then again maybe for lab purposes it's not so bad.

 

Yeah! I see your point but as it would be used for lab it's permissible. On the other hand you can have a separate USB stick with a copy of ESXi as a backup.

 

True, however the host will still be down while you're replacing the USB key... I think it's fine for a lab environment. I am just talking about prod, although this setup is for testing purposes!!
